Robin and John Gumaelius
Robin and John Gumaelius collaborate on their delightful sculptures, taking turns sculpting and decorating each piece. John prefers to pinch the clay into bird forms, while Robin works with slabs and handforming to create the larger, figurative and animal forms. Their leather-hard creations are then painted with ceramic underglazes and carved through to expose the bare, white clay.
Common motif inspirations are: radio stories, history books, biking adventures, gardening notes, post cards, and their children's drawings. The work unfolds as they create it and often the end results come as a surprise to their creators, as do the tites, which often come to them right before being taken to the galleries.
